Election 2016- WLEA School Board Elections- Endorsed Candidates & Materials

  • WLEA is endorsing re-election of: BITHER/TITUS/VAN LEUWEN for WL School Board. If you live in district we have yard signs at MEA office, please ask.

Member Engagement Bowling:

  • Nov 5th.  We have a team at Wixom (Dave/Becky/Mindy and Leigh) If you are interested in joining us please sign up. FUN and FREE (Bowling/ Food/ FUN FUN FUN)

Know Your Certificate November

  • YELLOW HANDOUT INSTRUCTION WILL BE HANDED OUT NOV 1st
  • It is your responsibility to have a valid certificate (not the districts to remind you) Know your expirations date/YEAR
  • 90% expire June 30th
  • Should be renewed before June and not before Jan of that current year
  • If you do not have a certificate the first day of school, the district has the right to dismiss the teacher from employment.
  • If you are laid off and you do not have valid certificate on call backs you cannot get called back (KEEP IT UP TO DATE)
  • Daryl will send email announcing this event
  • You will receive a prize for filling out the form in November and you will all be entered into a drawing for a larger prize

5th Grade Camp Committee: We are putting a committee together to review camp procedures. There will be teacher reps, Stuart, a couple building principals and Daryl. To look at possible changes that need to be made re: liability, sleeping issues, cleanliness.

MEA RA- Oct 8: 5 reps went to MEA RA in East Lansing.  A lot about the upcoming election. No new business items.  We elected an immediate MEA board member. There is a new MEA President, VP, Secretary and Treasure will be running in the SPRING RA.  The 5 reps will return in the spring and get to vote on those positions as our district representatives.

Sub Saga: It as bad as it has ever been, It appears through the report that some building are getting hit harder than others. Big issues that are happening: FAPES being pulled is not showing on the sub shortage it is showing as resolved. Today it is on the agenda for cabinet on Tuesday. Margaret has some ideas she will share at cabinet. Daryl will meet with Margaret on Tuesday. WL only hires subs that have teaching certificates. Members of WL cabinet are against non-certified teachers. State requirements are 90 hours.

Uniserve:

  • 3rd grade reading
  • This billed passed the house and senate. Retention if failure to meet grade-leve proficiency targets. The bill being revised. Including intervention and assessments info
  • IMPORTANT:Potential Pension Attach during Lame Duck
  • Devos is at it again: Attacking out PENSION SYSTEM.  One thing on agenda is overhauling Mi employee pension plan. There is no money coming in the system to pay for our pension.

MEA VOTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Go to www.mea.org/volunteer pick where you would like to volunteer, date, time.  We are working on getting Education back in the forefront of politicians. Our MEA Commerce office will be open for volunteering

Negotiation – Contract Review and Publication

  • It is being reviewed and will be electronically sent once it is reviewed.
  • $350 lump sum of our give backs will be in your next check

Grievance- 2016-17: 1 grievance this year so far

Membership

  • Total membership so far 826+ (people are still being hired)
  • 17 OBUM (people who have opted out)
  • Our members in good standing continue to increase.

Public Affairs

  • PTSA:  Nov 12th Parenting Fair: Jim Fey at West Bloomfield HS. Must pre-register
  • Endorsed candidate spoke at the middle school
  • It was taped (WLTV)
  • They hired 2 new principals

School Board

  • Mary Jane was talked about and a tribute.  Rosa Lee. Pat Johnson.
  • The audit 9.6 expected we had 9.7 in their fund
  • Student enrollment is up more than expected Good News
  • When Snyder says he is giving school more money.  The state gives each district money and the district has to give back immediately to the state.  As they give us more money our revenue increased. We are way above the 5% (7%) to be at early warning trigger.
  • We are selling 2 pieces of property. Next to Walnut Creek) a lot of wet land) On Maple near Wixom rd. Total under 1 million

New Teacher Club

  • Spoke on legal basics for New Teachers. Great turn out
  • NEXT MEETING AT ESC: Pam Shoemaker: Technology info 430-6 November 1st
  • New teachers hired after new teacher meetings will do a lot of this training next year.

Public Relations/Communications: Nothing to report
